Kirchner in America: Building a Legacy Through the 1968 Retrospective Exhibition.
Comprehensive Paper, University of Pittsburgh.
Abstract
Artists do not become a part of the historical canon by coincidence. Rembrandt, Matisse, and Warhol were, in a way, "marketed" by exhibits and art historians. We know these names today, not by coincidence, but through deliberate planning. German Expressionist scholar and Pitt professor Donald Gordon was one of the main advocates for the first traveling exhibit of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's works in the United States. Notably, this exhibit was financially backed by the German government, perhaps in an effort to change its reputation after the Second World War. This sociopolitical context begs the question: how did the 1968-1969 traveling exhibit shape the reputation of German Expressionist art, and more specifically Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, in the minds of the American public?
