Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic health care condition which effects the ability of the body to metabolize glucose and has major health implications due to the lifelong care associated with the disease. Diabetic rates in the United States are higher in minority populations. We conducted a descriptive analysis of the SMART BRFSS data 2021 of the Pittsburgh MMSA/Allegheny County to study whether the age at which a person is diagnosed with diabetes has a bearing on health equity/disparities. Using STATA, we conducted a descriptive analysis of the data to tabulate the distribution of diabetes by race and check for health care status – both mental and physical of the individuals who had already been diagnosed. The minority populations had a higher proportion in the distribution of diabetes in the region. The early onset group of diabetes also had a higher distribution of individuals with affected mental and physical health. This is of public health significance as it raises concerns for health equity/disparity among younger and minority population groups.
