Safe Consumption Sites: Barriers and Facilitators to Providing Effective Harm Reduction Interventions for People Who Use Drugs.
Master Essay, University of Pittsburgh.
Abstract
This integrative critical literature review explores the current literature regarding safe consumption sites (SCS), a harm reduction intervention designed to support people who use drugs (PWUD) in practicing safer drug consumption strategies. Using an integrative thematic approach, I characterize the existing evidence regarding SCSs and identify recurring barriers and facilitators to successful intervention implementation. In this analysis, I also explore the relationship between unauthorized and authorized actors in harm reduction, concluding that harm reduction in a hostile policy environment must necessarily take advantage of anarchist principles to advance the science and practice of these interventions. Finally, I highlight future directions and priorities for further research in this field based on the state of the existing evidence.
