Abstract

The ratio between the second to fourth digit length (2D:4D) is considered a marker for prenatal androgen exposure. 2D:4D is lower in males and correlates with many sexually dimorphic traits in humans, suggesting a role for prenatal androgens in these sex differences. Face shape has also been shown to correlate with 2D:4D. Evidence has shown that a lower ratio tends to be associated with more masculine facial features. Similar to facial features, sex differences have also been observed for the palate. This project will examine whether prenatal androgens (measured by 2D:4D) are associated with palate morphology in adults. Palate and digit data is available for 463 participants. Five palate measurements were collected from 3D scans of maxillary dental casts. Digit measurements were collected from digital hand scans and ratios calculated. Palate measures will be compared statistically between males and females. Multiple regression will then be used to examine the relationship between palate measures and digit ratios, while adjusting for factors like palate size and age. The prediction is that lower 2D:4D will be associated with more masculine palate features.
