#BreadWorkFreedom: Afghanistani Women’s Resistance and Online Activism against Taliban Oppression.
Master's Thesis, University of Pittsburgh.
(Unpublished)
Abstract
This dissertation explores the resilience and activism of Afghanistani women in response to Taliban oppression. It specifically investigates how these women utilize social media platforms, notably #hashtag activism on Twitter, to amplify their voices and advocate for gender equality and women’s rights in Afghanistan. The study uses qualitative methodologies, specifically semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, to examine the discourses regarding women’s resistance against the Taliban regime as formed by Afghanistani women online and how, through these resistance practices, the activists’ perspectives on agency, struggle, voice, knowledge, politics, and empowerment are emerging. The study highlights the role of social media in promoting global solidarity and awareness of marginalized voices, demonstrating how digital platforms function as crucial instruments for activism and promotion in repressive contexts.
