Abstract

In this dissertation I identified and explored the motivations, sense of belonging, and retention of Black families to an out-of-school learning program, utilizing a qualitative approach from the framework of culturally relevant ideology. Across five chapters, I examined the range of factors that inspire Black students and caregivers to attend and sustain participation in out-of-school time educational programs such as Pittsburgh’s Dr. Carter G. Woodson Academy (CGWA). Chapter one introduces logistical and organizational factors contributing to the creation of CGWA, and studies the rationale behind the development of the program. Chapter two examines the educational inequities of Black youth, explores the importance of culturally sustaining pedagogies, and outlines the curriculum of the CGWA program. Additionally in this chapter, the teachings and mission of Dr. Carter G. Woodson are examined, introducing the idea behind educational “fugitivity,” and how that methodology relates directly to the mission and purpose of CGWA. Chapter three reviews the qualitative data collected from CGWA students and caregivers to understand their participation and repeat participation in the academy. Chapter four analyses the data findings, proving that the motivations, sense of belonging, and retention of Black families to an out-of-school learning program are tied largely to awareness of Black history and culture, Black male role models, personal development, and positive learning environment. Lastly chapter 5 discusses the research questions, study limitations, offers recommendations for future work, and conclusions.
