Abstract
Explores the challenges of workforce development and professional education in a fast-moving environment, including the skills needed by academic libraries, how they can be acquired and who will deliver them in the future. Reviews the evolution and diversification of professional work manifest in broader functional responsibilities and deeper technical capabilities evident in the emergence of hybrid, blended and third-space professionals in business, higher education and libraries. Reviews competency models and conceptual frameworks for generic and specific knowledge and skills; identifies strategies for their acquisition and salient trends in professional education, including collaborative education and research partnerships between academics and practitioners.
