Abstract

Communities with low income families as well as communities of color experience a disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality. These health inequities are associated with lack of access to community services, inadequate housing and low employment opportunities. The public health significance that these inequities can have on adolescent females is that of higher rates of dropping out of high school, use of drugs and teenage pregnancy. Aliquippa, Pennsylvania is a city that may encompass the above disparities. This master’s essay describes a detailed plan for a community health needs and capacity assessment for the city of Aliquippa to help determine the health issues girls face and the city’s capacity to address their identified health needs. I believe this is the first step in developing interventions and enhancing current programs to address the needs of the adolescent girls in the community. The proposed community-based participatory assessment includes engaging the community through developing an advisory board, collecting existing data, conducting surveys and implementing focus groups.
