Abstract
Soil judging is a hands-on learning experience where individuals learn from experienced soil scientists about the classification and identification of soil features to determine their suitability for human use. Soil judging is a unique opportunity for experiential learning with practical experience; it develops and tests a student’s ability to apply knowledge and skills to real-world natural systems. I am seeking funding to continue to provide our students with this memorable and valuable educational experience. Coaching and leading the UPJ Soil Judging Team not only benefits the students but also puts forward momentum in advancing my career. This is my third year in the Geography and Environmental Studies Department; one of my career goals is to push the Environmental Studies major to higher standards and incorporate more field experiences and environmental science into the curriculum. Emphasizing a field component of environmental studies is relatively new to this department, within the Social Sciences Division at Pitt-Johnstown. Discretionary funds in the Division of Social Sciences does not budget for anything beyond offices supplies; field or lab equipment were previously not necessary. As a new faculty member in this Department, I have yet to accumulate field equipment that can be re-used subsequently every year for the competition as well as class activities. Soil judging as a creative educational endeavor fits perfectly with the goals of the Pitt Momentum Funds Seeding Grants to enhance educational opportunities that have limited funding.
