Emission-Management for Sustainable Computing Systems

Lee, Stephen (2023) Emission-Management for Sustainable Computing Systems. In: Pitt Momentum Fund 2023.

Abstract

Mitigating climate change effects will involve attaining a zero-carbon economy, where existing infrastructures shift away from carbon-based electricity and transition to zero-carbon energy sources that do not increase greenhouse gases. At the same time, computing demand continues to increase as new applications and services proliferate in our lives. Unfortunately, this will increase the overall energy demand and can significantly increase emissions. While current research has mostly focused on reducing the energy footprint, the key premise is that improving energy efficiency does not translate to the goal of zero emissions. Thus, the goal of this project is to prioritize emission reduction by focusing on reducing the emissions of computing systems.

This proposal will develop foundational mechanisms and emission-aware techniques to facilitate computing systems to track and reduce their emission and co-pollutant emissions, focusing on the local benefits. In addition, we propose to develop an emission capping framework for computing systems using which fairness policies can be built to ensure co-pollutant emissions do not disproportionately affect a particular region. The proposed research will have a significant impact on the development of systems that will address the challenges posed by climate change and characterize emissions that will transform how computing systems are managed.
