Abstract

Graduate students are at increased risk for stress and mental health disorders. University counseling centers are not focused on the unique mental health needs of graduate and professional students, leaving a significant gap in available services. The Pitt Personal Wellness Program, a 3-session curriculum developed and piloted to promote self-care and decrease stress in graduate students, evidenced promising clinical outcomes for first-year graduate students in Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy programs (Dietz, Kulzer, & Kondis, under review). This proposal aims to accelerate the dissemination and implementation of this evidence-based, self-care program to: 1) develop a training protocol for health sciences faculty to deliver the Pitt Personal Wellness Program to their graduate students, and 2) assess the fidelity of cross-faculty implementation and graduate student outcomes. We will also train 2-3 advanced graduate students as peer-support specialists to help struggling graduate students find mental health services and navigate University and community resources to support their retention and graduation. During this Year of Emotional Well-Being, the Pitt Momentum funds will allow us to advance the Pitt Personal Wellness Program, an effective, transportable, and scalable curriculum, to foster a culture of self-care within graduate programs for students in the health sciences.
